IMPORTANT NOTICE:
We’re sorry, but we are not offering new Rat pedals at this time. We’ll still mod your Rat, though, no matter when it was built.
We will still mod Rats with serial numbers under 300,000 (pre-early 2008) for $65. If your Rat's serial is over 300,000, we'll mod it, but we have to charge $99 because of the extra work these units require.
The basic Rat mod of ours requires drilling the case. We add a switch to make the unit more of a tone buffet! This is a must-have for people that need their Rat to be much, much more of an overdrive, tube amp pedal! New (May, 2003) Rat pedals ship with a chip that sounds horrible and has a bad sounding distortion to it, added to the top as a strange fizziness. Not our pedals! We found a stash of the correct ICs. These are fast becoming rare and we have the heavy duty LM308 Metal Can version! Your Rat will sound incredible!
We only change the chip if yours doesn't have the LM308, and if your rat has the LM308, then there is no need to change.
We also do a cap upgrade to improve the overall bass response. This is what happens when a Rat mutates with a Tube Screamer and a Clean Boost! $65 to mod a pedal you send in. Rat II pedals get a blue LED.
All Rat pedals get an tone upgrade as well. Caps are doubled in most cases to give you a little more bottom end meat to the sound. For the guy into pro DISTORTION, this is it.
Yes! Regular Rat, PHAT Rat, and the super clean, mucho volume Mighty Mouse!
ATTENTION OLD RAT FANS!!!! Hey, they don't make them like they use to. Heck, they don't make like they did last year, so if you are hoping our Rat mods will make your pedal sound like the one you remember 10, 15 years ago.... might not be the thing to hope for! These pedals have changed so much over time, and only the Name Badge is the same. They act very differently. So, if you had favorite settings, etc., buy an old one and check it out. Some folks say ours nail it perfectly, others hear some nuances in the old one they are just addicted to.
Our mods include about 12 changes! All of the coupling caps and bass repsonse caps are changed!!! This makes for some much improved sound quality. The toggle switch is where it all takes place! The toggle switch really makes it three pedals! Sounds are completely different, giving you a huge tool to carve tone with!
How do you know if you are going to be a RAT pedal fan? If you like a real cutting type of tone, one that sounds like a British type stack of amps and speakers, then the Rat is for you. Delivers classic tones as heard by Jeff Beck, John Scofield, as well as many Heavy Metal groups! Wide Range! Well, the Rat takes some fine tweaking! The controls are sensitive, but once set, it can be tonal Nirvana! Some of our most excited customers are Keeley Rat owners. Also, some folks just don't get it. (Hey, no fault right?!?! Not every pedal is for every person!) I can say, though, that the RAT and TS9 make a power dual pedal setup. For something that has a super sound combined, try your Rat and TS9. Experiment with the order of the pedals. These pedals sound completely different when one is put before the other, and vice versa. Are the magic settings Apocryphal? Yeah maybe a bit! But when set right... ahhhh you've found the golden needle in the hay stack, mate!
